Does SG{3} want to be freed? She has many times expressed a liking for the security of a communal login.
    Concrete, Abstract, or Squoingy?

          1. So is there a one to one correspondance of what courses you take and what exams (O, A, AS or GCSE) you take?

          2. Basically it's a national system of grading right? Is the main benefit supposed to be tighter standards? or more effecitve measurements for colleges/employers?

Erm... Yes - you take a geography course, you do the geography exam. The exam (O, A, AS, GCSE) course you take, depends on what standard you are taking the subject.
GCSE is the basic level, taken at 16,
AS level exams are taken at 17, as an addition to the GCSE course, and the A level exam is a continuation of the AS course, taken at 18.
O levels are no longer taken.

Yes, it is the national standard of exminations, taken nationally, and at GCSE level, they are pretty much the only qualifications it is possible to get before leaving school. I have no idea why it is as it is, it just has been since national education. I suppose it is a way of standardising educational qualifications, but I have never thought about it. England is small enough that there has never been reason to have more then the one system. It certainly provides a good benchmarker for employers and colledges yes.

So at age 16 you take 8-12 courses, at 17 5-6 and at 18 3-4? the courses must be of diferent amounts of depth right? Are you allowed to pick any selection you want? or are there some that are required (equiv of 12th grade english in the US for example?) Does the school day vary in length for diffeerent students? (who have more/less classes?) Do students generally take all thay can or the minimum?

You've got the basic idea. People take a general education up to GCSE level, then specialise looking towards their eventual university degree. (Which is the next step- down from three courses at A level to one or two at university level in Britain. You do not take minor subjects on the side like in many other countries.) The French system works exactly in the opposite direction, with fifteen core subject that you do not pick between at all. Most High Schools systems in the world vary between the extreme freedom and depth of the British system and the extreme breadth and general knowledge factor of the french system. Generally, somewhere in between is what's used in most school systems.

As for how many they take, from those I've talked to they have taken everything from four to six of the buggers. See, they're thorough but not that thorough. Extremely high grades are expected of the graduates. It's not a system that suits most people, I feel.

sorry, it's come back on track-ish, well, that's okay then...
Well, you have a better idea of the evil, torturous exams I am being forced to take than I have!
Well, the nice anarchistic revolution going on to free me and make me aware of my plight is, um... apreciated ( )
I still can't decide whether or not I wish to flee the nest...
I like the safety, but I want independence!
anyway, I will consider my plight and try to decide whether or not I /want/ to be freed
Can I be anarchistic without burning nice safe looking bridges?
*waves arms wildly* I want my own avatar!
okay that's enough anarchism, I ache from mucking out horses 10 hours a day! (work experience, mucking out horses is supposed to fit the criteria of 'LAW' or 'BOOKSHOPS')

                        SG{3},

You should stay in the hive. That way you can keep your elite noteriety and still complain about Daddy in an insuferrably cute, smiley-filled way.

Um and now shouldn't you be studying? Before you know it, you'll have GCSE exams and these can affect your future employability. Hit those books! Chop chop!

You must take English, Maths and some form of science. Most schools incist on a humanities subject (geography or history) and a modern language (usually french or german)
Other than that, there are something like 30 subjects to choose from, as long as the school you are in teaches them.
Does the school day vary in length for diffeerent students? (who have more/less classes?)
Usually everyone in one school does the same number, so school times only very between schools, rather than between pupils.

Do students generally take all thay can or the minimum?
Depends on the student. At GSCE, the school basically tells you how many to do. At AS level and A level, you do the "normal" amount for the school, and any extra or fewer are subject to the pupil's wishes, and school's consent.
                            Concrete, Abstract, or Squoingy?
